What is Char Dham Yatra?

Ask many Hindus about their desire for pilgrimage journeys, and most of them will tell you “Char Dham Yatra”. Traditionally, Char Dham Yatra refers to a collective journey to four dhams located in four different corners of India. These dhams are Badrinath in the North, Dwarka in the West, Puri in the East, and Rameswaram in the South. Interestingly, all three dhams—Badrinath, Dwarka, and Puri—are associated with Lord Vishnu or his incarnation. Only Rameswaram is associated with Lord Shiva. However, it can also be linked with Lord Vishnu. Because the Rameswaram Shiva Lingam was established by Lord Ram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu himself.

However, in the modern context, especially in Uttarakhand or North India, Char Dham Yatra means undertaking pilgrimages to four Himalayan shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Collectively, they are called the “Chota Char Dham.” Badrinath is common in both circuits: Bada Char Dham Yatra and Chota Char Dham Yatra.

Bada Char Dham vs. Chota Char Dham

Char Dham Yatra (traditional) and Chota Char Dham (Uttarakhand) are both significant Hindu pilgrimages. But they differ in geography, scope, accessibility, and spiritual focus. Here’s a quick comparison between the two pilgrimage circuits.

Char Dham: Four Abodes of God in the Himalaya

Yamunotri Dham—First Destination of Char Dham Yatra

Yamunotri is not only the source of the River Yamuna. It is a famous pilgrimage site in the Himalayas. It’s where people come from distant places to see the divine blessing from Yamuna Maiya (the deity). Taking a bath in Surya Kund (hot water spring) is believed to eliminate all your tiredness and the pains of the journey.

The importance of a spiritual visit to Yamunotri is high because it is the first Dham of the heavenly Char Dham Yatra. Every year, a large number of devotees visit Yamunotri. Devotees from Uttarkashi, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun can reach here on a full-day journey.

Many people also visit the Yamunotri Temple as part of Char Dham Yatra packages. The temple encompasses a black marble shrine (idol), dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. The temple offers a truly fulfilling experience.

Reaching the Yamunotri temple can be a bit challenging. There is no road access till the end. So, don’t assume that you will visit this sacred site by any vehicle. You will need to trek. You will need to pass through challenging routes. But you will have rewarding experiences. The route is scenic. And it offers spectacular views of the surroundings. And, yes, you can also take a pony ride to the top if you don’t think you can trek.

Having darshan of the deity, performing rituals as per the tradition, and enjoying scenic surroundings will surely uplift your spiritual site. Still, if you feel tired, don’t worry. There are two hot water springs nearby. The most popular among pilgrims is Surya Kund. Just take a holy bath in the kund and it will eliminate all your tiredness and the pain of the journey. Many devotees cook rice and potatoes here to offer the Prasad to the Goddess. The food is then kept aside and taken back home as Prasad.

Gangotri Dham—Second Destination of Char Dham Yatra

Next stop on the Char Dham Yatra packages is Gangotri. It’s a holy pilgrimage town in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Situated on the banks of the river Bhagirathi, the origin of the holy river, the Ganges. Located in the Greater Himalayan Range, this is the place where the Goddess Ganga descended when Mahadev released the mighty river from the locks of his hair.

The religious significance of Gangotri is immense among Hindus because it is also one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. It’s not only the source of the river Ganges, but also the seat of Goddess Ganga. Near the river, there is a stone where Raja Bhagiratha performed penance to Lord Shiva to bring the Ganga down to Earth.

Another highlight of Gangotri is the temple, called Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The temple was first built by the brave Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa. And it was restored in the 19th century to preserve its historic charm. Hindus worship at the temple and the river as the purifier of sins and the giver of life.

While the temple at Gangotri is the main pilgrimage site, the true origin of the river lies at Gaumukh. It is about 19 km away. Many devotees extend their journey with a trek to Gaumukh for a more profound spiritual connection.

During your visit to Gangotri as part of the Char Dham Yatra, you can also explore cultural experiences in Gangotri Village. You can shop for local goods like woolen clothes, handicrafts, and souvenirs.

Kedarnath Dham—Third Destination in Char Dham Tour Packages

Once you have completed the journey to Gangotri and have darshan of the Maa Ganga at the temple, you need to continue your journey to reach Kedarnath – the abode of Lord Shiva (locally called Baba Kedar or Baba Kedarnath). With one of our Char Dham Yatra packages, you will have a guided experience.

The Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Mahadev and is one of the most sacred Shiva Temples on earth. Also, it is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Bhagwan Shankar. This is why it holds great importance among Hindu devotees.

The temple of Baba Kedarnath is located at a height of 3,583 meters and is surrounded by the beautiful Kedarnath range of the majestic Himalayas. Note that reaching Kedarnath is also challenging. It is not as easy as making a visit to a temple in Haridwar. To reach Kedarnath, you will need to trek around 14 km from Gaurikund. The path will be steep and can exhaust you completely. But despite all the difficulties, thousands of pilgrims walk this path every year, chanting “Har Har Mahadev.”

There is also an interesting saga about Kedarnath. Legend says that the Pandavas wanted to seek forgiveness and grace from Bhagwan Shankar because of their guilt of killing their cousins. But… Mahadev did not want to forgive them so easily. He disguised himself as a bull and tried to hide. Luck for the Pandavas… they found him. Again, Lord Shiva disappeared into the earth, leaving his hump behind at Kedarnath. That is why the Shivling in the Kedarnath temple is in the shape of a bull’s hump.

Visiting the Kedarnath Temple gives ultimate solace to pilgrims. The aura is truly divine with spiritual power, the icy winds, and the ringing bells—a completely magical feeling you will have.

Badrinath Dham—Fourth and Final Destination of Char Dham Tours

The last stop of the Char Dham Yatra packages is Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. It is the most important destination on your divine journey to the four Dhams. Badrinath is extremely popular among pilgrims because it is also part of the larger circuit of Char Dham Yatra that includes Puri, Dwarka, Rameshwaram, and Badrinath. The Alaknanda River runs next to the temple, which makes it feel even more holy.

Once you enter the Badrinath Temple, ring the auspicious bells, worship Lord Vishnu, and feel the divine in your soul. Inside the Badrinath Temple, you will find the statue of Lord Vishnu, sitting in a meditative pose. People say that Shri Hari (another name of Lord Vishnu) came here to meditate, and Goddess Lakshmi stood as a Badri tree to shield him from bad weather. This is how the name Badrinath came about.

Badrinath is a beautiful and calm site because of the colorful temple and the tranquil area around it. People who come here often feel that their prayers have been heard by God.

You might be interested in purchasing some souvenirs and memorabilia, right? If yes, go to Salagram Sila, which is a sacred stone of Lord Vishnu. Here, you can purchase religious books, ancient relics, and holy threads. Our Char Dham Yatra packages cater to all your needs on your divine journey.

If you are an adventure enthusiast and do not mind daring a challenge, trekking to Kedarnath and Yamunotri is definitely a thrill for you. Of course, the Kedarnath Trek is challenging but an exciting and delightful experience, too. With each step you take on the trek to reach Kedarnath, you come closer to bountiful nature bestowed with fine forests, magnificent meadows, and a spectacular vista of the Garhwal Himalayas. We have designed our Char Dham Tour packages considering these aspects of the spiritual journey. Explore Local Villages, Especially Mana Village

On your Char Dham Yatra tour, you will come across many villages. Some are famous for their religious importance, while others are known for their copious natural beauty and unique traditions. These small villages are unique attractions in their own ways and contribute to making your Char Dham tour even more special and delightful.

One such striking village that you must not miss out on with your Char Dham Yatra tour package is Mana Village – the Last Indian Village. It is a charming place located close to the Indo-China border that truly deserves a visit. And, we are sure you will never forego it.

What makes this place very special among tourists and devotees alike is its extraordinary, peculiar beauty. Its offbeat charm draws a significant number of tourists, trekkers, nature lovers, and even pilgrims to Badrinath or Char Dham, every year. This is why the village is given a very special name, “Tourism Village,” by the state Government of Uttarakhand.

And the good thing is that Mana Village is not far from Badrinath; it is only 4.5 kms. When you enter Mana Village on your Char Dham tour, your heart will be seized by the copious beauty of the place. Your eyes will pop out. In simple terms, you will be completely stunned. Besides, you will also have shopping opportunities as the village is famous for handcrafted woolen shawls, blankets, and local herbs.

Visit Vyas Gufa in Mana Village

Natural beauty is the special attraction of Mana Village. Of course it is. There is something more, something unique, concealed in this stunning hamlet. Here lies the Vyas Gufa, a prominent tourist attraction in Uttarakhand. This place is very popular among pilgrims. It holds a special significance among the people of the Hindu faith. It is exactly the place where Vyas Muni (a great Hindu sage), with Lord Ganesha, crafted the Mahabharata epic. We are sure you will never forego visiting this special site on your Char Dham Yatra. Ensure that your Char Dham Yatra package features this unique highlight in the itinerary. If it's not part of the offering, inform us; we would be glad to tailor the package.

Explore Haridwar

Most Char Dham Yatra packages commence from Haridwar, a holy city situated on the right bank of the Ganges River. If your tour to the Char Dham pilgrimage starts from this city, grab the opportunity to explore the city. Haridwar is itself one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the country. The holy River Ganga, Chandi Devi Temple, Mansa Devi Temple, Maya Devi Temple, Bharat Mata Temple, Prem Mandir, Gayatri Tirth, and various ashrams are the highlights of sightseeing in Haridwar. But the route also covers several other stops and destinations that are also very amazing and worth exploring. The popular destinations and attractions on the route of the Char Dham Yatra include:

Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi is a prominent Himalayan town in Uttarakhand, 145 km away from Rishikesh. It is the main stops on most Char Dham Yatra packages. The picturesque town is often called the Kashi (Varanasi) of Uttarakhand in terms of religious significance. This is why the place is named as Uttarkashi. Known for spectacular mountainous landscapes and ancient temples, Uttarkashi is located on the bank of the River Bhagirathi. It is a base destination for visiting the Gangotri Dham, Yamunotri Dham, or the Char Dham Yatra. One key attraction in the holy town of Uttarkashi is Dayara Bagh, a beautiful meadow with spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayas. The place is also popular among trekkers and nature lovers.

Guptkashi

One important destination and holy site that you must not miss exploring on the Char Dham Yatra is Guptkashi, as it is one of the main stops on the route. Exploring this beautiful Himalayan town is a rewarding and spiritually enriching experience in itself, as it is also a famous pilgrimage site with many temples. Vishwanath Temple and Ardhnarishwar Temple are must-see attractions here. There is an interesting story about the name of this place. It is said that during the Mughal era, the original Shivling of Kashi Vishwanath Temple (Varanasi) was kept secretly here to protect it from Aurangzeb. This is why the place is called Guptkashi. Even if you choose the Char Dham Yatra by helicopter, you will come across Guptkashi. You will first have to reach Guptkashi Helipad and then take a flight to the Kedarnath Temple, and then further destinations.

Gaurikund

Gaurikund is the place from where you will need to undergo through the toughest trek to Kedarnath as part of your Char Dham Yatra. The holy site is a very famous pilgrimage destination on the way to the Kedarnath shrine, the abode of Lord Shiva. Gaurikund has a strong association with Lord Shiva’s wife, Goddess Gauri. Legend says that it is the same place where Devi Gauri has performed penance to win Lord Shiva’s heart. When Mahadev became happy with Gauri’s penance, he gave his consent to marry her. Once you reach Gaurikund, you must visit the Gaurikund Temple, dedicated to Devi Parvati (Gauri). There is also a beautiful lake here, which is called Gauri Kund Lake and holds spiritual significance.

Chopta

Chopta is a beautiful town and a divine destination for trekkers. The place is bestowed with copious, exceptional natural beauty and is often called the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand. If you explore around Chopta during morning hours, the view of Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba Peaks will mesmerize you as the sun rays fall on these peaks, making them gleam and even more spectacular. You can also explore the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sitapur

Sitapur is another important stop on the Char Dham Yatra. If you want to feel nature at its best, you must have time to explore this beautiful place. It is a beautiful nature-blessed hamlet, just 7 km from Gaurikund and 26 km from Guptkashi. Therefore, it is a perfect stop on most Char Dham Yatra tour packages.

Rudraprayag

Rudraprayag, named after the Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva, is one of many destinations and stops that you will come across on your Char Dham Yatra. The holy town is famous among devotees because it holds special spiritual significance. It marks the holy confluence of the two rivers: Alaknanda and Mandakini. Emerald lakes, spectacular glaciers, and silver water streams are the highlights of this holy town. Rudraprayag is also the base point of the famous Badrinath and Kedarnath visits. Once you arrive in Rudraprayag, take your time to visit the Jagdamba Temple and the Shiva Temple. Feel the spiritual ambience and seek the blessings of the deities.

Joshimath

Joshimath, also called Jyotirmath, is another important holy site on your Char Dham Yatra. This will come on your way when you return from Badrinath to reach Rudraprayag. Here you will find the Vasudeva Temple. The main significance of this temple is that the idol of Lord Badrinath is brought down here during the winter season. Another must-visit site in Joshimath is the Shri Shankaracharya Monastery, which is one of the four ancient monasteries established by Adi Guri Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. Here, you will also visit the Kalpavriksha, which is said to be 1200 years old.
