Char Dham is a spiritual journey for Hindus where they visit four sacred pilgrimage places in India. These places are:
It is the starting point of the Char Dham Yatra. The Yamunotri Temple is situated in a narrow gorge near the source of the Yamuna River in the Uttarkashi District. The temple is dedicated to the second most sacred river Yamuna considered as the Goddess Yamuna. To reach the temple, devotees have to complete a trek of approx. 13 km from Hanuman Chatti. During the trek, one can see breathtaking views of the landscapes and many waterfalls. After reaching the Yamunotri Temple, you will see and worship the Goddess Yamuna.
The temple is made of granite stone while the idol at Yamunotri is made of black marble. There are two Kunds—Surya Kund and Gauri Kund. Surya Kund has boiling water and the Gauri Kund has tepid water. There is also an idol of Goddess Ganga made of white stone situated beside the idol of the Goddess Yamuna in black stone. Devotees dip in the Yamuna River which protects them from untimely death.
Gangotri Temple is one of the four shrines in the spiritual journey of Char Dham of Uttarakhand. It is one of the most sacred pilgrimage shrines for Hindus. After Yamunotri Temple darshan, the next destination in the Char Dham Yatra is Gangotri Temple. Gangotri is the origin of the River Ganga in the Himalayas. People from all over the world come here to worship the Goddess Ganga. It is believed that even touching the Ganga River washes away people’s sins.
The temple was built in the 18th century. It is built with gleaming white stone that imitates the serene and pure energy of Goddess Ganga. It is standing as a simple-looking structure, perfectly complementing the serene atmosphere of the region. In the summer season, this white temple perfectly contrasts with the peak of the Himalayan ranges. Devotees marvel at the beautiful architecture of the temple and the serene atmosphere of the Himalayan valley.
Kedarnath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. Besides, it is also the first of the Panch Kedar shrines. The town of Kedarnath is situated approx. 3800 meters above the sea level near the sacred Mandakini River. It is one of the four shrines of Chota Char Dham Yatra. Every year millions of devotees visit Kedarnath Temple. The breathtaking views of the region are so captivating that people lose the sense of time.
One can reach the temple by trekking. Gauri Kund is the starting point of the trek to Kedarnath Temple which is approx. 16 km long. You will pass through scenic Himalayan views and beautiful villages. One can also fly to Kedarnath. Helicopter services are available from the Augustmuni Helipad situated near Rudraprayag. People can also use pony or a rent a palanquin to reach the temple. However, you will have to pre-book all these services.
Nestled in the Garhwal hills near the Alaknanda River, Badrinath Temple is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This is not only the part of Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand but also the main Char Dham Yatra. It is a holy shrine for Vaishnavites and also a part of the Panch Badri. The temple has a colorful gate called Singhdwara. It is approx. 50 feet tall and has a gold gilt roof with a cupola on the top. The temple is divided into three parts for the main puja and a place to assemble the pilgrims. These parts are called Garbha Griha, Darshan Mandap, and Sabha Mandap.
