Adi Kailash is located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India, near the Indo-Tibet border. The mountain offers a stunning view of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. It is situated in Pithoragarh, close to the Sin La Pass, and is also known as Shiva Kailash, Baba Kailash, Chhota Kailash, or Joling Kong Peak. The trek to Adi Kailash starts from Kutti village, and the base camp is 14 kilometers away. At 5,945 meters (19,505 feet) above sea level, it is one of the tallest peaks in the Kailash range.
The mountain is sacred due to its pyramid-like shape and the cultural myths and legends associated with it. For Hindus, it is considered an earthly replica of Mount Kailash, the home of Lord Shiva and his wife, Parvati. Adi Kailash is part of the five Kailash peaks, and Om Parvat, also known as Adi Kailash South, is nearby with similar spiritual significance. The Adi Kailash and Om Parvat Yatra is a remarkable journey that combines travel and trekking. Many pilgrims travel long distances to circle the mountain and seek spiritual peace.

Devotees of Lord Shiva embark on this spiritual trek that begins from Dharchula and passes through the beautiful villages of Uttarakhand. Adi Kailash Yatra also involves a mix of trekking and driving. Due to its motorable route, it becomes less strenuous for pilgrims.

Adi Kailash is a sacred mountain/peak in the Pithoragarh District of Uttarakhand, situated at an elevation of 5945 meters above sea level. Considered the mirror image of Mount Kailash, Adi Kailash is called Chhota Kailash. It is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva, where he resides with his wife and his sons, Kartikeya and Ganesha.
Similar to Mount Kailash, this sacred peak in the Himalayas of India holds great spiritual and cultural importance for Hindus. It is considered the second amongst the “Panch Kailash” (the five sacred peaks of Lord Shiva in different locations in the Himalayas).
Several mythical stories are associated with Adi Kailash in the Hindu Scriptures. Let’s see its historical and mythological importance in the Hindu religion.
In many puranas, such as the Skanda Purana, it is said that Adi Kailash was Lord Shiva’s first home since the beginning of time. However, it is believed that Adi Kailash is the secondary abode of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati after Mount Kailash. According to the Puranas, Adi Kailash was the main stop of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati before their marriage. The legend has it that Lord Shiva meditated here for several years. Devotees still feel his divine presence in Adi Kailash, which represents his unbreakable bond with Goddess Parvati.
It is the place where Mata Parvati meditated to win Shiva’s love and marry him. The legend has it that Goddess Parvati, the reincarnation of Mata Sati, was deeply in love with Lord Shiva and wanted to marry him. But Lord Shiva was not interested in marriage; then he asked Parvati to perform some complex tasks to test her devotion. Impressed by her steadfast devotion, he agreed to marry.
Panch Kailash is a group of five sacred Himalayan peaks, considered to be the abodes of Lord Shiva. Adi Kailash is the second amongst the five Kailash peaks.
People visit Adi Kailash primarily for its deep Hindu spiritual significance as the abode of Lord Shiva. But it is also believed that visiting Adi Kailash provides profound spiritual enlightenment. Along with Adi Kailash Darshan, devotees complete the circumambulation of Parvati Sarovar. It is believed that this peak can transform negative energy into positive energy. They experience tranquillity and inner peace and connect with the divine.
