Mythological History
Ganesha-Kartikeya Legend: To settle who would marry first, Shiva challenged his sons to circle the world; Ganesha cleverly circled of his parents, claiming they were the world, and won. Upset, Kartikeya left for Mount Krounch (Srisailam), where his parents later visited him, leading to the manifestation of the Jyotirlinga (LOrd Shiva) and a Shakti Peetha (Mata Parvati).
Princess Chandravathi: A princess found a glowing linga in the forest, where a cow offered its milk; she built a shrine around it, naming it Mallikarjuna (Shiva with jasmine creepers).
Shiva-Parvati Encounter: In another tale, Mata Parvati (as a Chenchu tribal girl) met Shiva while he was hunting; he fell in love and stayed with her, with their divine union celebrated even today by the local Chenchu tribe.
